Insadong Street

Located at the heart of Seoul , Insa-dong Street is one of the most distinct places in the country where the past meets the present. One can definitely turn back time and experience Korean culture at its finest. Visit galleries with traditional fine art, hear traditional Korean vocalizations in the street, shop in antique stores after enjoying an authentic Korean meal with a cup of traditional tea; all these can be made possible within Insa-dong's alleys.

Commonly referred to as the giant flea market of Korea , Insa-dong begins at the Tapgol Park and extends about 700 meters. There is only one main road but with small alleys on each side. Within these alleys are cafes, unique shops that cater to all age groups, antique stores, Korean stationery stores, handicraft shops, pottery and porcelain shops, used bookstores, art supply stores, and painting studios. Truly a central district for the arts, Insa-dong houses around 100 galleries and art houses, from Korean traditional fine art to paintings and sculptures. Visitors can use the Art Center Bus to visit over 10 of the most famous galleries in the area. After a tiring day of shopping and sightseeing, there are also a wide array of traditional restaurants and teahouses to choose from.

Every Sunday, Insa-dong transforms into a "car-free street." Stores will set up booths outside, and all kinds of people go here not just to shop, but also to watch and even participate in traditional performances and exhibits -- the Open Culture Hanmadang Festival. During the month of April, the prestigious "Insa Traditional Culture Festival" takes place.
